Some are tangy and citrusy, others peppery, green, soapy, or powdery. Some are watery and lush, while others are deep and dark or sweet and starchy, reminiscent of Turkish delight. What shapes these differences in a rose perfume? Many things: the rose variety, the soil and conditions in which it grows, the harvest season, the extraction method, and the perfume blend in which it dazzles. A rose’s persona is a confluence of these factors.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSilk Rose was rosy enough for some, but not for others. There is always a range, often wider than you might expect. I understood this in theory and had some experience with it, but the more noses that smell your work, the more you see how differently people perceive the same materials. I wanted to explore rose again, not to chase a new definition of “rosy,” but to shed new light on rose as a material, one where it dances with oud.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI set aside a portion of Silk Rose as the starting point. The Nangarhar rose, in particular, hinted at another direction, a luminous freshness that I wanted to capture, polish, and bring forward. I followed that thread with grapefruit, cardamom, and patchouli.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile Silk Rose rests on an assembly of Borneo oud and a Silani–Burmese co-distillation, I wanted to venture into resinous green territory with this branch. How could I resist the small sample of Merauke oud I received from a collector, from a 2017 batch? It explores the fresher, high-frequency facets of the Nangarhar rose at its core: green, satiating, and alive with contrast. Grapefruit lifts the opening with an electric, bitter snap, cardamom cools the heart with an aromatic breath, and patchouli anchors the base with a deep, woody hum. Beneath it all, Green Rose retains the same ouds as Silk Rose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eWhat began as a quiet exploration among a small circle of collectors found its way to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/iammosafir75\/\"\u003eRashed Choudhury\u003c\/a\u003e, who saw in it a distinct weight and presence and envisioned a dedicated edition for his patrons and community. That study will also give rise to a second sibling, which I plan to release publicly as an Unscripted blend next year.
