I watched it for nearly a year, unable to work out why. Then, after one particularly windy day, the bougainvillea beside it bent over the little tree, shading it from the relentless sun. Within days, it came alive and began to flower: creamy, lightly honeyed, powdery. That was my first experience of frangipani, and with this project, I set out to rebuild that living memory.

I initially wanted to name this *Al Hosh* (الحوش)—colloquial Arabic for courtyard, the open space at the heart of a traditional home where family gathers, children play, and trees grow under the open sky. It’s where that little frangipani tree stood, and where this blend truly begins.

Frangipani as an aromatic material is available as an absolute. Diluted, it comes close to the living flower, but not quite; an absolute holds the heavier end faithfully, yet loses much of the volatile top—the part that exists only in the air around a blooming tree. Starting from an absolute to capture the aromatic range meant starting with a challenge, but it also opened the door to artistic interpretation. I supplemented it with bright, volatile elements, including grapefruit and orange blossom, exploring several directions and building a deep reserve to draw from across future releases.

To understand the composition of this blend, it helps to look at how its elements unfold across distinct structural layers. Moroccan orange blossom and magnolia lead the opening, accompanied by jasmine, almond, and bright volatile accents like grapefruit that lift the florals and set an inviting tone. At the heart sits frangipani as the central axis, carrying its signature heady, weighted presence—honeyed, powdery, and creamy—before transitioning smoothly into Greek Chios mastic. Coconut and Mysore sandalwood act as unifying voices, binding the disparate facets together alongside a subtle touch of tuberose. Past the middle, orange blossom re-emerges briefly over a bed of Moroccan rose.

The blend was originally structured to be light on oud, keeping it within the *Dukkan* tier (with dedicated oud add-ons reserved as an option for those wanting to take it further).

Yet as the formulation sat, something felt missing—a proper base to give the volatile top and delicate mid notes a true shoulder to stand on. To resolve this, I integrated a complex foundational accord I had been refining separately. This addition brings a deep, resonant backdrop that feels right at home alongside the existing florals: Aged Turkish Rose, Bulgarian Rose, Rose Gallica, Rosa Rugosa, Rosa Alba, and Red Champaca, anchored by Vintage SQ Civet and Ethiopian Civet, where subtle accents of rhubarb, vanilla, honey myrtle, lavender, and clove create the precise contrast needed to reveal the full complexity of the florals above.

Because of this shift in scale and structure, the blend transformed significantly—to the point where *Al Hosh* no longer felt like the right title for what it had become. I might not have ended where I wanted starting from frangipani, but I couldn't be happier with where I arrived. The true complexity of this blend would not have been fully appreciated unless it was contrasted against that deep SQ civet base. The final outcome is far larger than the sum of its parts: you get the bright, fruity opening, moving into a lush heart of rosy and white florals rich with powdery sweetness, all grounded by that vintage SQ civet, which could not have asked for a better opening act.

Musk macerated in a blend of Purple, Iriani oud, and a few more aromatics touches to balance the profile.

Iriani makes up nearly half of the composition, with the other half split between the musk and purple maceration.
