It is slightly gourmand, with an ever-so-subtle oakwood balsamic smokiness that is genuinely attractive. Secretive and luring.

I wanted the cherry to be as realistic as possible, so I worked from a combination of absolutes and essential oils, and tinctured Iranian cherries from an Iranian market in Muscat. The result, while subtle, is the cherry fruit leather you’d find in traditional Iranian markets: ripe and dark rather than cloying, held in check by the smokiness, resins, and musk.

I started this blend with a firm commitment not to add oud, so any oud added later would be icing on the cake. The profile ended up so believable that everyone who smelled it thought I had used it. The impression was simply the outcome of the materials I chose. Only once the blend was nearly finished did I give it a real oud backbone, with a heavy dose of Koh Kong to amplify the resinous and fruity quality in an oud-like style, something that can’t be achieved any other way. Why, if it was already good? I wanted to make it ever so slightly better. It’s the difference between a rough cut and a smooth, surgical refinement.

So what’s inside? Purple, with its iris, ambergris, lilac, and nigella, among others. Then come the musks and oakwood, with roses: Moroccan, cymosa, and rugosa. Cumin and star anise add a touch of spice, while a roasted chestnut accord and vanilla bring a creamy smokiness. The fermented fruitiness comes from cherry, pomegranate, and cherry blossom tincture, and a touch of cacao, more earthy and woody than nutty, balances the overall presence.

The result is musky, powdery, dark fruity, slightly smoky, and oudy, with the notes coming at you all together and cherry at the center.

If you ask me, it’s a complete composition, and I don’t feel add-ons are a valid proposition here. That said, I understand that someone may try this and have their imagination spurred, so I’m still happy to entertain bespoke requests on this one. Read more about add-ons here.

I’ve been working on a musk blend with Purple, building a middle ground between the many faces of powdery notes: the earthy side of iris, the floral side of ambergris, and the gourmand side of musk. Misk Ateeq is a branch of that exploration, taking it in a vintage direction. It has a touch of spice that teases out the aged jacket of an old book in an old library.

To my nose, it stays balanced. Not overly gourmand, but resinous, spicy, and sweet enough to bring out that old leather, maybe even the dried glue of an old binding.

It’s an impression of age, reverse-engineered through the way the materials come together. In some ways, it reminds me of a small attar batch I made a couple of years ago when I was starting out, Ghazali Vintage.

So what’s inside? Purple, with its iris, ambergris, lilac, and nigella, among others. Then come the ouds, the musk, oakwood, and the spices.

The oud notes come from aged Koh Kong and premium Thai ouds. The musk is a concoction I made from Tibetan, Mongolian, Siberian, and Nepalese musks, bringing a deep animalic character to the blend. Oakwood brings a balsamic woody character I couldn’t find in any other material. The spices were more of a balancing act, and honestly, I can’t remember exactly how I built them. Broadly, they’re earthy, sharp, dusty, and slightly gourmand.

When I started, it was almost a spectacle to watch. Purple completely ate up every bit of musk I added. I’d add more, and it would disappear again.

At some point, I decided to stop. “Khalas. Let it sit.”

Only then did the musk start to take over. After a few weeks, the blend reached a point where both sides finally decided to play along. That’s the part I can’t rush, and the part I’ve learned not to fight. Just sit back and observe.

A while later, I added a good dose of red champaca: honeyed, floral, pollen-powdery (as opposed to chalky, dry powdery). I felt it was another face of the same powder, one that sits between the earthy iris, the floral ambergris, and the gourmand musk, and it spoke to the colors of this one.

Apply it to skin and you’re hit first with a wave of earthy spice, balsamic notes, and an animalic edge. Then red champaca steps in and tames the spice, pulling it down toward the powdery center of the blend and taking it into a vintage direction. Something like fermented fruits follows before it transforms into Purple’s powdery iris and ambergris. For me, the oud begins to reveal itself somewhere in the middle.

This blend needs a bit of time to sit on the skin and warm up. Projection is what you’d expect from an attar.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0720/5866/7161/collections/WhatsApp_Image_2026-09-12_at_13.36.21.png?v=1790712271
