The Work
I approach perfumery as both a process of discovery and a form of expression. My background in architecture, computational design, and software development shaped how I think about composition: as a system of interacting elements where a single change can reshape the whole.
I think of my approach as intentional improvisation. I begin with an idea or a goal, then explore different ways to reach it. Sometimes I have a clear direction in mind; other times, open experimentation leads somewhere I didn't plan for.
I do not aim to reproduce a successful formula; I want to keep exploring rather than settle into familiar patterns. That is why I do not document my Unscripted work for exact remakes, and why I avoid keeping samples of my own finished work—though that may evolve over time. Each composition is an exploration in its own right.
The different lines at Elkhaldi Studio reflect these distinct ways of working:
- Unscripted is where I explore freely. Working directly with materials, I follow an idea, a hunch, or a question, allowing the composition to develop through trial and discovery. The result is not a repeatable recipe, but a singular snapshot of that process—and perhaps, over time, a more refined intuition.
- Co-authored grows from direct collaboration, as a subcategory of Unscripted. Working alongside another artisan introduces a different perspective and a fresh way of approaching materials. The exchange challenges my own habits, helping me break away from familiar signatures and discover directions I might not reach alone.
- Curated brings together work sourced from other artisans and collectors. I select work that possesses a distinct integrity and deserves a place on your shelf.
- Tailored takes the idea of reinterpretation further. Here, an influencer or curator who has earned the trust of their fragrance community commissions a new composition branching off from an Unscripted blend. They bring the vision and the community; I bring the perfumery. The result is a dedicated, single-batch release available exclusively through them, built on an existing Unscripted work.
These lines are not merely product categories. They reflect different relationships between discovery, selection, collaboration, and reinterpretation.
Perfumery, as a form of art, is expression given material form. But don't be fooled into thinking that an expression exists in isolation from the person who creates it. What we make is inseparable from who we are, shaped by our experiences, histories, and moral values. These things inevitably find their way into our work, whether consciously or not.
My own work carries messages and aspirations that reflect my perspective. One such aspiration is to stand up and add my voice to those who speak about Palestine, politics, and the causes that matter to me. After all, you can't separate creators from that which they create.
I understand that the choices we make have implications and consequences. I choose to make my own, and to speak about what matters to me, including Palestine. I've detailed my views in Art Not Fiction and Art with Bias.
This perspective continues to shape my work and the directions I explore. I am developing another line at Elkhaldi Studio and will update this page as it takes shape.
